So far with the novels I’ve read the only themes I noticed were living in a combination of happiness and depression. How people can live with their happy moments while eventually or at the same time depressing events occur. In the summer when I read more and watch a couple of movies the theme may alternate or even change as only so far I read two books. The first one being the boy in the striped pyjamas about a boy named Bruno who’s family moves out of town because his father got a new job as a ss officer. Bruno having to move with his family made him a very bored child since he now has no friends, having trouble making new ones. But Bruno being adventurous he travels in the woods to explore and discovers a boy in striped pyjamas sitting behind a fence and they start a strong friendship together. This is where the theme comes into play, they have such a happy time together being friends but they can’t play together like normal boys because of that fence so Bruno gets a pair of styled pyjamas and goes where Bruno would be in that camp. Bruno and his friend Shmuel ends up in a gas chamber and both die. This is where the father of Bruno as the officer who is part of controlling the gas chambers feels depressed how his son died in a place the father would have control over.
The next book I read is its kind of a funny story. The main theme of this one is about peer pressure and being yourself but those two links up with the themes I’m focused on. What this story is about is a 16 year old teenager named Craig who suffers with depression and ends up in a psychiatric hospital. The depression part of my theme is quite obvious here. A boy who suffers from depression quite bad but this is where the happiness comes. As he is suffering with depression in the hospital he ends up in for a few days he makes friends who suffers familiar problems. He gets to know them, he understands them and they understand him, they don’t pressure him into doing things he don’t want and he ends up with a girlfriend who is in the same hospital as him. There was a few problems in the hospital but at the same time Craig learned a lot and had fun with the new friends he made.
Today i will be adding a movie. The movie being Titanic because it easily fits in with my theme. A story about a young man named Jack winning tickets to the Titanic and meets a girl named Rose. They end up having great times together falling in love with each other so they’re happy right? As their happiness continues on the Titanic hits an iceberg causing the ship to sink which was a dramatic event since it’s based on a true story. After the disaster Jack and Rose are together freezing whilst floating on the water. As they were so happy together the depressing part comes into play as the Titanic sinks killing many people and Jack the one who was Rose’s new soul mate dies.
iv’e read a non fiction poem which grabbed my attention as it fits well with my theme. The poem itself is called “Negativity” it’s about the past in the author’s life how he had such a dark time being treated with betrayal, lies and heartbreaks by ones he was close with. Now all of that bit fits in with the depression part of my theme. The happiness comes in when he realizes all the mistakes he made with the wrong people and lives happily without people like that. The author is still living a good life today and he’s happy.
Iv’e read another poem called “Bring the fight back” the poem is about the authors mother becoming ill again. They was all happy how she survived the first big illness yet in the poem there was no word on what kind of illness but we could imagine it being life threatening. So as the family is happy the mother gets that same illness again. Went from good to bad just basically what links with my theme. So the author who is the son of the mother in the poem shows faith that she will actually survive this illness and the whole family feels she’ll survive again. By the looks it goes from good to bad to back to good if she survives of course.
A few months ago i watched a film which fits in with my theme. That film is called catch me if you can. Based on a novel also a true story about a teen named Frank Abagnale Jr. who runs away after finding out about his parents divorce. After the run away he gets rich by getting money from banks with fake checks he made, gets all kind of careers by lying and changing identity and making fake degrees for that career. Frank goes from depressed (because of his parents divorcement) to the most genius and richest criminal on earth so of course hes all happy with all the money, the girls and the careers. But then after years of finding him the FBI finally catches him giving him long years in prison which obviously is depressing for him. But everything turns out great for Frank since the FBI let him out early to give him a job that the FBI needs. Which is checking fake checks because he’s a master on that and can help the FBI dealing with frauds. So frank had a mixture of happy and depressing events in his life but all is good for him now.

Hi Albert,
I’m very interested in the texts you’ve read so far and the way you’ve decided to interpret them. It occurred to me that you might really like watching the film “Donnie Darko” because it also deals with mental health in the teenage world, and it does so in a very inventive way.
I also think you might enjoy the novel “Vernon God Little” by DBC Pierre for similar reasons.
Please don’t hesitate to ask if you’d like any assistance sourcing and choosing books for your theme.
